The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) proudly celebrates the success of its inaugural Native Fashion Week in Santa Fe, an event that honors indigenous style and culture. From May 2 to May 4, SWAIA brought together artists, designers, and enthusiasts for a weekend of fashion and community.
Elevating Indigenous Voices
The festivities commenced with a VIP reception at the New Mexico Governor's mansion, attended by over 300 guests from across the United States and beyond. SWAIA Executive Director Jamie Schulze, alongside Fashion Curator/Producer Amber-Dawn Bear Robe and Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber, delivered opening remarks, setting the tone for an inspiring series of events.
The following day, the "All About Indigenous Fashion Symposium" at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) drew crowds eager to engage with crucial topics. Esteemed speakers, including Tantoo Cardinal, shared insights on the significance of Native American fashion. Panel discussions, featuring industry experts like Vicky Milner, explored the evolution of indigenous design, fostering meaningful dialogue and exchange.
Runway Revelations
SWAIA Native Fashion presented daily fashion shows that showcased the work of 17 Indigenous North American designers. With 140 models and the expertise of over 30 makeup and hair artists, the runway became a canvas for artistry, captivating audiences with its diversity and creativity. The Santa Fe Community Convention Center was transformed into a fashion playground, with artist pop-up shops and unique activation spaces enhancing the experience for over 2,000 attendees.
"We are taking this moment to acknowledge the successful launch of a new, annual, native fashion week under the SWAIA brand authority," said Schulze, emphasizing SWAIA's commitment to promoting native arts year-round and driving economic opportunities for artists and their communities.
Looking Ahead
As attention shifts to the upcoming 102nd annual Indian Market on August 17 and 18 in downtown Santa Fe, excitement builds for another showcase of indigenous artistry. Bear Robe is already planning an unforgettable SWAIA fashion show on Sunday, August 18, promising an immersive experience for attendees.
