LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: ILARA HEALTH

For Africa to me... is more than a glamorous fact. It is a historical truth. No man can know where he is going unless he knows exactly where he has been and exactly how he arrived at his present place.

- Maya Angelou

The bond between African Americans and Africa is profound, forged through a shared history and emotional connection. Centuries ago, the transatlantic slave trade forcibly separated millions of Africans from their homeland, subjecting them to unimaginable suffering in America. Today, there exists a collective yearning to bridge this division.

I have spent a good amount of time considering ways to help my people, who have persistently battled for their existence since being uprooted from their homelands. Initiatives such as the 'Year of Return' in Ghana, declared in 2019, symbolize a growing discourse surrounding the restoration of ancestral ties. This initiative, centered in what was known as the Gold Coast — once a hub of the European slave trade — aims to encourage descendants of enslaved Africans to rediscover their roots. Similarly, South Africa has embarked on a similar endeavor to bolster its ties with the diaspora, offering free citizenship to Black Americans. These initiatives motivated me to offer Sainte Jean supporters the opportunity to donate 5% of their purchases to Ilara Health.

With a mission to transform healthcare accessibility for Africa's low-middle income demographics, Ilara Health offers a beacon of hope. Founded in 2019, Ilara Health pioneers the provision of essential diagnostic tools to small healthcare providers, filling a crucial gap in the region's medical landscape.

In a continent where over half a billion individuals lack access to basic diagnostics, millions succumb to treatable illnesses annually due to late detection. Ilara Health intervenes by equipping small health clinics, particularly in Kenya, with diagnostic equipment and affordable financing options. This strategic move enhances the quality of care and augments clinic revenue streams. Their vision extends beyond Kenya, aiming to expand across the continent and empower over 200,000 clinics catering to millions of patients monthly.

In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, Ilara Health embodies a commitment to ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being across Africa. Their holistic approach to healthcare, marked by innovation and inclusivity, promises to redefine medical care on the continent, saving lives and fostering sustainable development.

In my exploration of Ilara Health, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness yet joy, as I realized the weight of legacy - the toil, aspiration, and resilience encapsulated in the past. I am the dream and hope of the slave. Delving into my lineage often evokes an emotional and mental response. In such moments, I prioritize my health by nurturing my mind, body, and soul. This Self Sunday, following the publication of this letter, I intend to indulge in this skincare regimen, nourishing my skin with care and love:

Today, I'm adding the The Jade Gua Sha Facial Lifting Tool to my arsenal. According to their website, the jade gua sha massage tool for the face serves as a lymph drainage massager, sculpting and defining facial contours while diminishing puffiness and fluid retention. It also alleviates facial and jaw tension and promotes circulation. Consistent utilization of the gua sha tool contributes to facial firmness and uplift.

When you have a moment check out one of my favorite pieces, North Star.

As recounted in accounts of slavery, the North Star served as a navigational tool for escaping slaves, directing them toward the North and the prospect of freedom. Its location could be determined by identifying the Big Dipper, a familiar asterism in the night sky during late winter and spring. We honor this piece of history with a 14K yellow gold necklace with a compass.

In the words of Diallo Sumbry, "And it's important for African Americans to know, that if you don't know, you do have a culture."

Best, Tenay Mathis
